The Lady Cassandra’s Secret

She said
‘I’ve had someone hate me
and someone love me
I think I prefer hate
Being loved is vile.’

I said
You can’t know ‘vile’ until you have been in love
with someone and they say “I do not love you”
That is the worst’

The Lady turns quickly away
And whispers
‘There is one thing worse
Being in love
And telling the one you love
That you do not love him
Oh that is so much the worse . . .’

‘My lady?
You whispered something . . .’

‘Just a spell to drive away the darkness . . .’
