Soldier’s tears

And there
in a box of no great size

toffee bars, I think

toffee bars

in my life of pain and filth and muck
under this sky and covered with dirt

toffee bars

I promised myself
that I would eat them
one half cookie per day
that way I could stretch them out over several weeks

I ate them all at once
and wept as I ate them
