Do you feel full, or empty?

the koi find reasons to gape the air
silvered ripples find ways to curl
the supple and yielding leaves
the day finds a reason to be

she said
“It’s over.
Do you feel full, or empty?”

she reaches for my shoulder
but her fingers twine in my hair
kindness radiates from the point of contact
the place where her universe touches mine

i reflect on the undulating waters
after all no reflection is ever free of distortion

i am sad/happy with shades of amber and patchouli
am glad/tired with subharmonics of pizza and dr p
missing the structure that is the chaos that is the play
and as the guy said
the play is the thing

i am photographed and monographed
and mocked and cheered
some have come to know me better
while others have sought to find me gone

she lays her head against my shoulder
and i shift to accommodate her form
shift to thoughts of puzzle sex under cold blankets
white like snow . . .

i inhale fully
meaning to breath her an answer in words
meaning to mean something this time
and fail into a sigh that she will misinterpret
but she slides her hand under and around my arm
enfolds me in her scent
holds me in her eyes

yes
mistakes were made
and this war was no small thing
but I have learned
while other men have stood waiting to die
that all battles begin and end in the heart
and for just an instant
for one microsecond or more
i would swear i have one
swear that i have a heart . . .
that is

the koi find reasons to gape the air
silvered ripples find ways to curl
the supple and yielding leaves
the day finds a reason to be

she said
“It’s over.
Do you feel full, or empty?”

‘I feel . . .’
it is all I can offer
