She hesitates at the door

She hesitates at the door
reluctant to be in this room by herself
full knowing when she returns
the room will be the same
but she will be different

She hesitated to fill out the application
not because she feared they wouldn’t take her
but because she knew they would . . .

She pauses at the quaver in her mother’s voice
Moms are strong and never quaver . . .
nor quandary or have qualms
and now the reality she knows
crashes into the feelings she’s had
and suddenly her Mom is human

She reflects on the mirror
She hesitates at the door
reluctant to leave this room
full knowing when she returns
it will be the same
