Daughter of the Night on the balcony railing

the vault of the Night
Her mother

looking out across the Night Kingdom
Her back to me
The wind playing with her hair

standing there
leaning on the balcony railing

“Please let me help you. . . ”
She laughs at my offer
A dry laugh through wet tears

“I would move Heaven and Earth
Commit the heresy of bending Time and Space
Place the heads of your enemies at your feet. . .”

She sighs
Says, “Can’t save someone from themselves”
