the most monstrous thing

the most monstrous thing
is the thing that laughs while you bleed
laughs all the way out the driveway
and spins the gravel

the most monstrous thing
is the way you feel about yourself
like you can never again be truthful with anyone
like it was all your fault for admitting how you felt

then just when you have passed through the darkest of the seven stages
(You know them
Count them
Shock and her lying brother Denial
The Pain & Guilt twins
The Traders in Anger and Bargains
The pit of Depression
and then for just a moment you slip
and a bit of sunlight finds a crack. . . )

the most monstrous thing
is the way she comes back and says she’s sorry
and ever so gently pulls that size ten fish hook
out of her really nice purse

the most monstrous thing
it the self doubt you feel as you firmly but succinctly
shut her down
