She said Please don’t cry

She said
Do the stars still burn?

I said
Can’t tell
the sky is overcast
Darker than your eyes
the night you drove away

She said
Do the stars still burn you?

I said
Like tiny drops of acid
falling from a sky the color of aged pewter
Like tiny whisps of light
falling on a collapsed heart
And even dead stars
still burst

She said
Please don’t cry

I said
nothing
