remember yourself

in this
the darkest time
remember yourself

find a cubby
a hole
a close and warm quiet place

and spend some time letting your thoughts go
i have to keep telling myself not to ‘problem solve’
you will be better able to do that
after this exercise

remember what you look like
without a mirror
remember what you smell like
as if you just met yourself
remember how you would act
if you witnessed an atrocity
if you witnessed an act of unselfish kindness
if you witnessed the world without a single preconceived notion

friends will understand
family will come to terms
commitments may be a dodge to keep you from the work
of facing yourself
by yourself

as i always say
if i met myself in a bar
would i buy myself a drink?
