Jesserec sits at a desk older than the house

Jesserec sits at a desk older than the house
and the house is old beyond memory

The ornate Victorian brass candlestick
a monument to coagulated wax
no longer holds and light
no longer holds any warmth

His aged hands
little more than a claw clasping an ancient fount-pen
scratches and slashes the parchment
leaving ink insect trails

Hidden in the bedlam of his desk
sequestered in geologic sediment layers of sentiment
his unfinished poetry coils and hisses
“Finisssssssshhhhh meee . . . Finisssssssshhhhh meee.”
