Grandmother’s Tapestry of Time

Dungeon Prompts: Family

Grandmother’s Tapestry of Time

Went to see Grandma
Yeah she’s fine
Asked about you and the kids

Anyway she sat me down on the couch
The big overstuffed couch
we all chipped in and got her
And she was doing that kinda giggle thing
You know how she can be when she’s got a secret

So I sat on the couch
And she brought me a glass of ice
And a Dr. Pepper
And the ever present napkin of Love
And we just set there

“OK what is so funny Grandma?”
“Notice anything about the couch?”
“Not really.”
”Nothing?”
“Well it is facing the wall
And it used to face the big picture window.”
“And . . .”

Honestly
I had no idea what she was going on about
But you know how she loves springing surprises
And frankly she’s kinda cute in that way

So I looked at all the things around the wall
Then I noticed the tapestry
It was something totally new
You have got to go see this thing
Its beautiful

“I made it.”
Her face actually glowed
This is not a metaphor
It actually glowed

So I poured some more Dr.P
And leaned back to take it all in
Kinda Celtic
That big tree thing you see a lot
And I swear to you
She had made the leaves so real
you could almost see them dance
And as I watched I could see them flicker
And the swirls
Blue and gold and green and . . .
I mean she had only used the primary colors
But they blended right there before my eyes
And the swirls were swirling

The hair on the back of my neck stared to rise
And I could feel pricklies on my arms
And I swear to you
The whole thing was moving
It was like the top was being woven
And the bottom was frazzling
And there are no human words for what I was feeling

I leaped up and ran to the tapestry
There were thousand of tiny spiders across the top
Weaving in colors beyond description
And patterns that were true all the way down to the microscopic
And all the way out to the ends of the room
And there was the color of my surprise
at the very top

“It my memories.”
Was all she would say
